Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate growth differences between soil and nutrient solution cultivation methods using grafted cacti. The grafted cactus, Gymnocalycium mihanovichii var. friedrichii cultivar ‘Gohong’, was grown in soil and hydroponically, and its growth characteristics were compared. The hydroponic method included an ebb and flow system and a bottom mat without bench. The results displayed that the hydroponic cultivation of ‘Gohong’ resulted in improved growth compared to soil cultivation. The hydroponic method produced the highest fresh weight. However, there were also concerns about root rot in soil cultivation, as well as traces of hydroponic cultivation on the rootstock in the ebb and flow system. Overall, the hydroponic method, using a bottom mat without bench, was found to be the best growth method for this cultivar. In the future, the increased use of this method is recommended to improve productivity on farms.
